A Lowestoft institution showcasing the town's rich maritime history is looking for new volunteers ahead of the coming season.

Currently closed for the winter, Lowestoft Maritime Museum - based on Whapload Road - is on the hunt for new recruits ready for its opening on Saturday, April 6.

While the attraction already boasts a core group of volunteers, chairman Jim Aguss and treasurer Carol Daines are keen to see a new generation of maritime enthusiasts step forward.

'People think it's only about being here when the museum's open, but there is a lot going on behind the scenes,' said Mr Aguss. 'People work throughout the winter to get us ready.

'There are a lot of things dotted around at the moment, but come April 6 it will be in a brilliant state and it is all down to the people who give up their time.'

Mrs Daines added: 'What we really need is an influx of younger people who can start to take over different jobs. We have a number of people who are in their 80s and we can't rely on them forever.

'It is no good waiting until somebody is not here. We need to get younger people in now so they can learn the ropes ready for the future.'

An open day from 10am to 2pm on March 20 will give prospective new recruits an opportunity to find out what volunteering entails.

The museum - which is also looking to bring in a new secretary - will open from 10am to 5pm, seven days a week, until Saturday, October 26 during the season.

With the museum celebrating its 50th anniversary last year, Mr Aguss is determined for local people to embrace the history of Lowestoft.

'It's so surprising how many people have lived here all their lives and have never been here,' he said. 'This is the only fishing history the town has left now.

'We're opening earlier than usual this year to coincide with the Easter break. It gives children a chance to come into the museum and see the town's history, and gives families something to do during the holidays.'

Anyone interested in volunteering or becoming secretary should call Jim Aguss on 01502 569165.
