A series of free art workshops is set to launch in the town centre.

The Seagull Theatre, a local not-for-profit venue, has partnered with Messums gallery owner, to host the workshops.

Messums will be the tenant of the new Post Office Gallery space, which is due to open in Lowestoft in 2026.

The Seagull has agreed to work with Messums to launch a series of community art workshops to support local engagement with the project.

The first free workshop will take place on Friday, December 13, in the Battery, the new cultural space at 119 London Road North, which was formerly the Tesco store.

Running from 10am to 4pm, this first workshop will be led by Francesco Poiana, an Italian-born artist who studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.

Francesco will support participants to discover ways of making their own paints from natural materials.

Over the course of the day, people will be able to make some colours and start to create their own watercolours.

The workshop is entirely free to access, and lunch is being provided.

Assistant theatre manager Des Reynolds said: “We are excited to be able to work with Messums to bring even more opportunities to Lowestoft for residents to get involved with high quality art activities.

"Francesco’s workshop on the 13th December is hopefully the first of many great free chances for local people to experience the benefit of getting creative and exploring cultural expression.

"The Seagull is committed to widening participation in the arts for our community and we are so proud that Messums have chosen to work with us to develop these community engagement workshops.”

The Post Office project will reimagine the building as an arts venue that will enable more people in Lowestoft to engage in creative experiences.
