Fire crews have investigated a "really strong" gas smell in a seaside town.

The incident happened this morning at about 11am in Plumtrees, Lowestoft after locals took to social media to report a "very bad" odour in the air.

An eyewitness reported that two fire crews, an ambulance and a gas van all attended the scene due to the smell which was reportedly "all over Lowestoft".

Holly Debbage said: "I can smell it at the end of Sands Lane. Really strong." 

Abigail Barbor said: "It’s very bad down Tonning Street way."

The gas was smelt in Plumtrees to as far as Wollaston Road, places nearly an hour's walk apart.

One local theorised that the smell could be the result of a boat out at sea venting out its tanks, though the official cause of the strong gas smell remains a mystery.

Sikirstie Attwood added: "It's all over Lowestoft."

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue commented: "Two engines attended a scene in Plumtrees due to reports of a gas smell. They didn't find anything after a thorough search."
