A dog who saved her owner's life by pulling her out of a period of depression has contracted a dangerous infection and needs to undergo emergency surgery.

Chelsea Lance, 26, has had Bailey the German Shepherd-Akita cross since she was six weeks old.

Bailey has not yet turned two but has already helped Ms Lance through a string of traumatic experiences including a break-up, six months of living in a caravan and three months of sleeping in a tent on the "cold, wet and rainy" beach.

After her last season ended two months ago, the pooch started excreting a "thick" and "browny" discharge.

She also lost her appetite and started rapidly losing weight.

The discharge soon turned green and Ms Lance took Bailey to the vet where she learned she was suffering from pyometra - a life-threatening infection of the womb.

Ms Lance said she was given three options - she could either give Bailey a two-week course of antibiotics, send her for a £3,000 emergency operation or put her down.

She opted for the antibiotics but said they did not help and made Bailey's condition far worse.

"She's actually bleeding now," Ms Lance said.

"She needs the op but I'm on benefits - there is no way I can get all that money together on my own.

"When I got Bailey, I was suicidal pretty much all the time but she now gives me a reason to get out of bed.

"It would mean the absolute world to me if she got the treatment she needs because, without her, my life would be back to nothing."

Ms Lance's friends encouraged her to launch a GoFundMe page to fundraise and it currently sits at £185 of its £3,000 goal.
