They are a poignant reminder of the many lives lost in battle.
And as a nation prepares to fall silent for Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, the 'There But Not There' life-sized silhouettes - or 'Tommies' - have returned to a popular park.
Lowestoft Town Council has installed the silhouette figures - which it keeps in storage for the rest of the year - on the benches in the poppy memorial Remembrance Garden at Belle Vue Park in time for this year's commemorations.
The town's Remembrance Sunday event takes place at the War Memorial on Royal Plain on Sunday, with the ceremony starting shortly before 11am following a parade from Claremont Pier.

On Armistice Day - on Monday - the town council has organised three smaller services to commemorate the occasion at the War Memorial on Royal Plain, at Lowestoft Cemetery and at Belle Vue Park,A town council spokesman said: "All are welcome to attend these services as we gather as a community to pay tribute to the brave service personnel who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our nation."
Free parking for Remembrance events
Free parking will be available in council-owned car parks across East Suffolk this Sunday to support those attending Remembrance events.
East Suffolk Council has agreed with town and parish councils to offer free parking during set times in council-owned car parks on Sunday in the following: Beccles (1pm-6pm); Bungay (1pm-6pm); Halesworth (1pm-6pm); Leiston (8am– 1pm); Lowestoft (8am–1pm); Oulton Broad (8am-1pm); Saxmundham (1pm-6pm); Southwold (8am–1pm).
Cllr Tim Wilson, East Suffolk’s cabinet member for Economic Development and Transport, said: "Signs will be in place on the payment machines within each car park advising visitors of the free parking offer."
Veterans, serving troops and cadets heading to Remembrance Day activities around East Suffolk will also be able to get free bus travel this Sunday and Monday as First Bus offers free travel to the Armed Forces community on November 10/11.
To be eligible, passengers can either wear their military uniform, medals or show the bus driver their Forces ID card.
