A new convenience store looks set to open on a row of shops in a coastal town - despite concerns being raised about noise and its late-night alcohol licence.

The new convenience store and off licence could open its doors in "early December" at the site of a former funeral directors.

It comes after a bid for a new premises licence for a Premier store at 143 Oulton Road, Lowestoft was given the go-ahead following a meeting of East Suffolk Council's licensing sub-committee.

With public safety, nuisance and noise concerns raised from locals, councillors approved its application to stay open until 11pm.

Locals had expressed concerns about the new premises licence amid what was said to be ongoing problems with anti social behaviour on the street.

With applicant Piratheepan Theivaruby lodging a bid for a premises licence to be granted under the Licensing Act 2003 at the site of the former East of England Co-op Funeral Services in Lowestoft, two objections were submitted to the council.

A meeting of East Suffolk's licensing sub-committee held at Riverside, Lowestoft discussed the matter.

Discussing the new premises licence for Premier at 143 Oulton Road, Lowestoft, sub committee chairman John Fisher said the main concerns referenced noise from the row of shops "already causing nuisance" amid fears an additional convenience store would lead to increased deliveries, traffic and parking problems.

The committee heard from the applicant's agent, who described the applicant as "an experienced operator that has worked in the trade for 18 years."

Cllr Fisher said: "They already operate an existing shop in Lowestoft and have never had any issues before.

"The applicant intends to open the premises in early December 2024."

The sub-committee heard that the applicants insisted on a condition on the licence that deliveries will be made to the back of the shop premises between 8am and 8pm.

After hearing from all parties, Cllr Fisher said: "The decision of the sub committee, having considered the application, the licensing officer's report, and the representations received from the applicant and the objectors has decided to grant the application subject to the conditions as applied for within the licence.

"The licensing hours (supply of alcohol for consumption off the premises only) will therefore be Monday to Sunday 7am to 11pm."
