Offices close to a town centre could be converted into new homes - provided plans get the go-ahead.

A bid has been lodged to convert commercial offices in Lowestoft into 13 new homes.

A scheme centring around "the conversion of commercial offices into residential at 23 Alexandra Road" in Lowestoft along with "adjacent associated land to the rear and side all within the current ownership" was submitted to East Suffolk Council last month.

The prior approval application submitted by agents Morse Webb Ltd on behalf of the applicant Tony Burrell, for Wise Smart Living Ltd, is currently "awaiting decision."

With the application seeking prior approval to convert a commercial building into a dwelling at the site on Alexandra Road in Lowestoft, a design and access statement from the applicants said: "These proposals are to change the use of the existing commercial areas into a total of 13 dwellings."

As the site on Alexandra Road, which had been previously used commercially as a solicitors for more than a decade, is made up of three buildings "with mostly hard landscaping and parking between," it adds: "The existing main property was most likely built in the late 19th to early 20th century and an extension to the rear of the building was carried out in 1986 to increase the office space.

"The building has Victorian features.

"The proposals have been designed to utilise the existing internal circulation layout with minimal changes to the exterior of the buildings through the conversion."

If the proposals are given the green light, it will see the Original House converted into seven properties, with the central building becoming four properties and the single storey outbuilding converted to accommodate two dwellings.

It adds: "All properties are to be single bedroom, with a mix of one person and two person properties."

East Suffolk Council are likely to make a decision in the coming weeks.
