It dates back to the early 1900s having been built to carry the railway between Lowestoft and Norwich over the River Waveney for more than a century.

As one of less than a handful of fully operational original swing bridges in Suffolk and Norfolk, the Somerleyton Swing Bridge, over the River Waveney on the Norfolk-Suffolk border, was built in 1905.

Still using many of its original components, tours of the historic Somerleyton Railway Swing Bridge were successfully held earlier this month as part of the Heritage Open Days in the Lowestoft area.

Described as "a very rare opportunity to see the bridge operating and learn more of its history," the tours had been held by kind permission of Network Rail.

And having proved popular, there will be another chance to enjoy tours of the 119-year-old swing bridge this weekend.

This Sunday, September 29 Lowestoft Central Project and Wherry Lines have teamed up with Network Rail to offer public tours of Somerleyton Swing Bridge, courtesy of Network Rail.

A spokesman for the Lowestoft Central Project said: "Courtesy of Network Rail we are able to offer public tours of the Edwardian railway swing bridge at Somerleyton on Sunday, September 29."

The tour on Sunday is "strictly by appointment only," and to apply for tickets please email lowestoftcentral@gmail.com

Ahead of that, tomorrow (Saturday, September 28) between 10am and 4pm the Lowestoft Central Project is hosting the Wherry Lines Autumn Graft and Gift Fair at Lowestoft Railway Station.

It is set to feature a host of stalls from local crafters and makers.

Admission is free on the day with stalls inside the station parcels office and on the station concourse.
