Motorists faced disruption in Lowestoft due to a malfunction with its new £145 million bridge.

The long-awaited Gull Wing Bridge opened to pedestrians and traffic for the first time on Saturday, with hundreds queuing to be among the first to cross it.

But, four days on, it faced issues.

Drivers reported being turned away from the bridge on Wednesday morning after it became stuck.

Footage from a live stream on the Gull Wing Lowestoft website showed the bridge slightly open.

Vehicles were forced to U-turn and leave the bridge after realising they could not cross.

According to the AA traffic map, some queues formed in the area.

The bridge reopened at around 9.15am.

A Suffolk County Council spokesman said: “We apologize for the temporary disruption caused by a minor issue with the Gull Wing this morning.

"We are pleased to report that it was quickly resolved and traffic continues to flow smoothly.”
