Motorists are being warned they could face delays as parts of the busy A47 will be closed overnight during 12 weeks of works.

National Highways will be carrying out resurfacing works and renewing road markings along the A47 in the Lowestoft area from later this month.

It will see stretches of the A47 closed overnight with drivers facing diversions as works are carried out on weekday evenings between Rackham's Corner in Corton to Sparrows Nest in Lowestoft.

According to the One Network highways map, "delays are likely" as the works are carried out on the A47 between Monday, September 16 and December 7.

A spokesman for National Highways East said: "We're resurfacing and renewing the road markings along the A47 in Lowestoft between Rackham's Corner in the Corton area to Sparrows Nest.

"We plan to start work on Monday, September 16 for 12 weeks.

"We'll work weeknights only between 8pm and 6am, weather permitting."

Ahead of this an "engagement event" will be held at Triangle Market in Lowestoft tomorrow (Friday, September 6) from 11am to 3pm.

The spokesman added: "This drop-in event is a great opportunity for our project team to explain the planned work and listen to your concerns."

As part of the works, vegetation will also be cleared - with "overhanging trees along the A47 between Corton roundabout and Sparrows Nest" being cut back during the daytime.

National Highways East said this daytime work takes place between September 30 to October 11 with "two-way traffic lights" in operation.

As part of the overnight works, a series of closures will take place.

The A47, between Station Road roundabout at Hopton and Gunton roundabout at Tesco’s, will be closed nightly from Monday, September 16 for four weeks, with diversions in place.

For three weeks from Friday, October 11 the stretch of the A47 between the Blundeston roundabout to Gunton roundabout at Tesco’s will be closed overnight, with diversions in place.

From October 24, five weeks of overnight works will take place from the A47 Gunton roundabout at Tesco’s to Sparrows Nest in Lowestoft, with diversions in place.

The spokesman added: "Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, smoother road surface."
