A community project has advanced to the national Youth Matters Awards semi-finals.

This initiative, the Shine Community Hub, run by YMCA Trinity Group, has been spotlighted for its outstanding dedication to serving the Lowestoft area.

The services provided by the hub have resulted in its shortlisting in the 'Support and Advice Project of the Year' category.

The project’s positive impact is especially evident in the support and aid it offers to more than 500 people via services like a community fridge, a warm room during cold weather and an essentials hub — this last one supplying vital items such as fuel vouchers, clothing and toiletries.

Another feature is the refrigeration of surplus food donations, thanks to partnerships with Neighbourly and Fareshare.

Kay Westgate, youth programme manager at YMCA Trinity Group, spoke of the team's pride at the recognition, saying: “We are incredibly proud that Shine Community Hub has been recognised in the YMCA Youth Matters Awards.

"This nomination is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team and the resilience of the Lowestoft community.

"We encourage everyone to vote and help us continue making a positive impact in our community.”

The community hub also offers an allotment programme for young people to grow their produce while a community cooking programme assists individuals in learning to prepare healthy meals within budget.

Volunteers are key elements in this initiative, giving back to the community and building new skills while bolstering their mental well-being.

The value of Shine Community Hub is perhaps best illustrated by a testimonial from a service user: “You’ve made a significant difference in my life by helping me get out and about, mixing with others, and providing support through the community fridge and cookery lessons."

The public can vote for the initiative until August 26, sending a strong message of support for the community-building efforts of Shine Community Hub.
