Two elderly ladies have completed a charity walk to honour a well-loved figure, raising funds in the process.

Residents and staff of the Harleston House Care Home in Lowestoft undertook the challenge as a part of the First Light Festival, in memory of their late friend, Jackie Winfield.

The care home residents, Margaret Crowe, 81, and Sheila Bultitude, 91, were resolute about paying tribute to Jackie, who succumbed to cancer three years ago.

Jackie was a devoted walker and fundraiser herself.

The home annually hosts a fundraiser in Jackie's memory and this year, both ladies were eager to face a challenge.

After agreeing on a sponsor walk, the event was scheduled on June 22, a date that marked both the birthday and the day of passing of their dear friend, Jackie.

Margaret and Sheila wore T-Shirts bearing Jackie’s picture throughout the day, symbolising her presence during the event.

Despite encountering mobility issues, both ladies fulfilled the pier-to-pier challenge, managing to successfully raise £560 in total.

Daughter of Margaret Crowe, Annie Barrows, said: “What a fantastic day, thank you so much for organising and including Mum, we’re so proud of you all and such a fantastic amount raised for all the residents to benefit from."

The home's activity organiser, Gareth Harding, also expressed his pride.

He said: “I am so proud of the residents for taking up the challenge and proud of the home’s community supporting them both in raising £560 and for doing so in honour of a very brave lady.”

The funds collected from this challenge will go to improving the lives of the residents at Harleston House.
