With the UK's only free beach festival taking place in Suffolk this weekend, an additional late train has been announced to allow partygoers to get back to Ipswich later than usual.

East Suffolk Lines, in partnership with Greater Anglia, announced an extra late train from Lowestoft's First Light Festival in a post that read: "First Light Lowestoft is almost here! Get there and back by train.

"Stay all day! Greater Anglia is running an extra train."

The late train from Lowestoft will now depart at 11.05pm, arriving in Ipswich at 12:31pm, giving party-goers some extra time before heading home.

The train will also stop at Oulton Broad South, Beccles, Brampton, Halesworth, Darsham, Saxmundham, Wickham Market, Melton and Woodbridge along the way.

Tens of thousands are set to flock to First Light Festival, on the town's South Beach, after the festival lineup was announced in March, including DJ Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, comedian Shaparak Khorsandi and poet Hollie McNish.

Festival Organiser, Genevieve Christie, said: "With regular trains from Norwich and Ipswich arriving at Lowestoft station in the heart of the town, it is a really easy way to get here.

“Where else can you walk from a station to a festival in less than 20 minutes? This is sustainable travel at its best.”

Chair of the East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership, Aaron Taffera, also said: “We are grateful to Greater Anglia for working with us to put on an additional train, ensuring that the festival is fully supported by public transport.

"This will really help to keep congestion and pollution out of the town and provide fast, easy access to people coming in from further afield.”
