Redevelopment of a prominent town theatre could soon take a major step forward.
After plans to provide a new link building at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft were given the go-ahead in September last year, tenders are now being sought as part of a £3.4 million project.
As the Marina Theatre is owned by Lowestoft Town Council and operated by the Marina Theatre Trust, a tender opportunity - centring around design services for redevelopment of the Marina Theatre - is being offered.
A town council spokesman said: "The redevelopment includes a new link building, works to the auditorium and refurbishment works.
"Design Services include developing the project through RIBA Stage 4 to 7, acting as Principal Designer under CDM regulations, M&E design, structural design, QS, preparation of construction tender documents and acting as Contract Administrator for JCT construction contracts.
"The overall maximum project budget, including design service, surveys and construction value is £3.4 million."
A scheme centring around: "New Link Building, wheelchair accessible lift, toilets, box office and entrance to the Marina Theatre, Lowestoft" was submitted to East Suffolk Council last July, along with "Internal alterations to improve toilets, seat spacing and wheelchair provision."
With the 'Application Permitted' under delegated council powers in September, a decision notice from the council's delegated case officer said: "The proposal would result in significant additional public benefits including increased accessibility to the theatre and improve facilities.
"Overall, it is considered to enhance the character and appearance of the street scene.
"In conclusion, the proposal would result in significant additional public benefits including increased accessibility to the theatre and improve facilities.
"The extension is considered to be of a high-quality design."
Those interested in submitting a design services tender bid for the redevelopment of the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft should send in bids by February 23, with further information available via email admin@lowestofttowncouncil.gov.uk
