The green light has been given to plans to transform a basement beneath a hairdresser's shop into a micropub.
Applicant David Burd, as part of planning conditions, has three years to turn the vacant site below StudioS on London Road North into a bar after plans were approved.
Mr Burd, who once was the landlord of The Stanford Arms, expects the capacity to be approximately up to 30 people.
He also recently ran the bar at The Grit venue as the bar manager.
His plans say that the opening of the micropub will be limited to weekends.

Plans also outline there will be no structural changes to the current layout of the building, which has a basement floor.
East Suffolk Council, as part of the conditions for approving the plans, said the micropub shall not be open to customers outside of the following times:
Monday to Saturdays 5pm to 11pm
Sundays and bank holidays 5pm to 10.30pm.
Lowestoft Town Council also supported the plan while the environmental protection officer said "sound must be contained" to limit the impact on nearby residential properties.
