Demolition work is set to begin this week as a new industrial development in the heart of a coastal town takes a vital step forward.
After two years of design and planning work, vacant land is set to be transformed as part of a scheme that could be a "catalyst for further regeneration" in the Lowestoft area.
Work is under way on a former industrial site for The Nexus – a new development on Newcombe Road, Lowestoft.
Two disused industrial buildings which currently occupy the site will be demolished as part of a scheme that will see 16 purpose-built contemporary business units of varying sizes - ranging between 35sq m and 225sq m - on land adjacent to Newcombe House on Newcombe Road, Lowestoft.
The site will also be landscaped, and internal estate roads will be created.
As a scheme was lodged with East Suffolk Council in November last year, plans submitted by agents Concertus Design and Property Consultants on behalf of the applicant East Suffolk Council was approved by the council's planning committee North at a meeting in June.
Now with work under way, it is hoped that The Nexus - once complete - will become a natural hub for clean energy companies, appealing to both start-up and more established businesses.
Toby Hammond, East Suffolk council’s cabinet member for economic development and transport, said: "As part of Lowestoft’s PowerPark, The Nexus will provide modern, attractive premises for local businesses, and will offer a range of unit sizes to attract businesses to come to Lowestoft.
"At East Suffolk we are particularly keen to welcome companies to apply for The Nexus who are committed to a low carbon future and the many high-quality jobs that will offer."
With East Suffolk Council assisted by Allman Woodcock throughout the initial design and planning phase of the project, construction will be undertaken by SEH as the units will be marketed by Bycroft Commercial.
