A coastal charity that provides seafront holiday accommodation to former members of the armed forces, merchant navy and emergency services has received welcome recognition.

After being set up in memory of one of the nation's greatest war heroes on August 7, 1919 the Lord Kitchener Memorial Holiday Centre in Lowestoft has been recognised by the county’s High Sheriff for the great and valuable services it provides to the community.

The historic grade II listed building on Kirkley Cliff, was founded by the former secretary of state for war.

And the venue that offers hotel-style holidays to British and Commonwealth ex-armed service and ex-emergency service men and women has welcomed the High Sheriff of Suffolk.

Major Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton is a former army officer and principal private secretary to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

He said: "I have come to acknowledge the huge contribution the centre makes to the local community as well as to veterans nationally and to the wider emergency services all over the region.

"The centre is under fantastic management of the Ashworth family who have come in here and have placed their own stamp on the place.

"I am here as High Sheriff this year to say thank you on behalf of the veteran’s community in Suffolk and on behalf of the people of Suffolk and it is a privilege to present the centre with a framed certificate which is an award in recognition of great and valuable services to the community."

Treasurer Karl Smith said: "We are delighted that Jamie has visited as he highlights and promotes the great work that military charities do within the Suffolk area.

"As well as offering holiday accommodation, our fundraising also includes having a military and veterans or emergency services breakfast every alternate Saturday.

"We are building a community for people, who may be alone, to meet up and chat."
