Don't get the hump if you miss out on playing one of the most famous characters in the history of literature.

That is the message to people who want to show off their vocal talents after a theatre group started the search for Quasimodo, Esmeralda and a choir of strong singers.

Having just finished their very successful run of Snow White at The Marina Theatre, Lowestoft, the Lowestoft Players are already planning their next musical production - The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

As the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral in 15th-century Paris, Quasimodo - the deformed bellringer - longs to be observing all of Paris.

Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful Romani woman, Esmeralda.

Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit though, the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled.

With the classical story to be staged at the Players Theatre in May, the production team is looking for characters plus a cast of strong singers.

Director Stephen Wilson said: "We definitely need strong singers for this production.

"Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass – we need the lot.

"This will be the first production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame in the eastern region, and we are delighted to be showcasing it at Britain’s most easterly theatre."
