An injured RAF serviceman who was left paralysed from the chest down after his vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan has handed over a cheque to a charity that supported him in the difficult days after his injury.
Kevin Ogilvie and his wife Amie, along with their daughter Grace, presented the cheque for £22,103 to representatives of SSAFA, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, and the RAF Benevolent Fund.
Mr Ogilvie suffered life-threatening injuries in 2012 but the two charities stepped in to provide accommodation for Amie and the couple's young daughter Grace while Mr Ogilvie began his four-month recovery.
The determination which saw Mr Ogilvie overcome his injuries has now been focussed on a year of fund-raising events culminating in a family skydive in April. The cheque was presented at a special ceremony at RAF Honington.
Mr Ogilvie said: 'The support given to us by both the RAF Benevolent Fund and SSAFA has been invaluable during the difficult days of my recovery. We know they will be there to support our family for as long as we need them to. The fund-raising is really our way of saying 'thank you' for all their help.'
A midsummer ball, which raised almost £7,000, as well as supermarket collections have all added to the couple's tally.
In addition to this supporters have completed events on their behalf, including sponsored bungee jumps – helping the Ogilvies exceed their target of £10,000 for each charity.
Mike Neville, the RAF Benevolent Fund's fund-raising director, said: 'Kevin and Amie's story is inspirational.
'His determination to overcome such devastating and life-changing injuries is cause for celebration alone. But to turn this into a way of raising funds for the charities which helped him and his family along the way is truly awe-inspiring. We are humbled by the Ogilvies' generosity.'
The couple were nominated for the national Soldiering On People's Choice Award in April and their achievements were recognised by the RAF Benevolent Fund when they were presented with the Above and Beyond Award at the charity's annual awards earlier this year.
